The Valley is named after its inhabitants, a minority of Germanic origin called the Mocheno-Cimbrians, who arrived here in the Middle Ages, when the valley was an important metal mining centre. Today the Mochen Cimbrians are one of the several ethnic minorities living in Trentino and are afforded special protection under a law enacted by the Autonomous Region of Trentino Alto Adige; a Mocheno-Cimbrian Cultural Centre has been established here, housing a museum and a documentation centre, and an old mine has been expertly restored and adapted as a memorial to the mining skills of the Mocheno people and makes for an interesting attraction in summer.
Following up on the idea to renew the Vigolana trails, and the entire area of the Vigolana Consortium, the 60 km Vigolana trails project was launched, which has since been completed and now each trail is signposted with its name and detailed information as to its difficulty, time and start point.

This route is fairly long overall but not particularly difficult; it is a route worth doing for the most beautiful views over the peaks of the lower Alps of Lombardy and Trentino. You start from Storo in the Cà Rossa area just before the bridge over the river Chiese (parking). Initially you pedal towards Tione and about 200m before the junction with the main road you take the underpass. After this the long climb begins; it is distinctive because alongside the numbering of the hairpins you will see the nicknames of the people who worked on the building of the road.
After 13km you will be at the Alpe di Faserno where, at 1,436 m., you will find grazing pastures and some mountain houses. From here you continue towards Malga Vacil where you can admire the rewarding views.
